KATHRYN WIELINGA

"Kathryn (Kate) Wielinga holds a Bachelor of Communication with Distinction, a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Newcastle. She is admitted as a Solicitor to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and High Court of Australia.

Kate is experienced in both the private and public sectors assisting clients with family law, criminal, traffic, and civil law matters. She now practices exclusively in family law, including complex parenting and property matters.

Before becoming a lawyer, Kate worked extensively with charity groups and sat on the Board of Directors of a high-profile burn foundation. In this role, Kate learnt how resilient humans can be with the right guidance and support through their hard times. This has heavily influenced the way Kate assists her clients: she commits herself to achieving the best possible outcomes, with a view to her client's longer-term realities.

Kate has worked on a number of high-profile matters including the application by Kathleen Folbigg for judicial review of her criminal conviction. Kate has researched and published articles in a number of areas of law, including forensic evidence procedures.

Outside of law, Kate has a special interest in the wellbeing and inclusion of children and adults with disabilities. She remains hopeful for the implementation of the recommendations made by the 2023 Disability Royal Commission. Kate looks forward to a world that is just as welcoming to her youngest son - who has Down Syndrome - as it is to his older brothers.
